Why Ovals
Designing a chain ring shape that is not round but oval with a combination of Physics, maths and practical real world testing, has shown us that some gains can be made. A smoother power stroke allows the legs to work harder & more efficiently through the hardest parts of the pedal stroke.

The dead spot
We have all experienced those moments when the climb becomes a challenge. Suddenly the road goes up again, around a corner & steeper, the pedalling becomes more a stabbing motion than a rhythmic one. This is the result of a zone called the dead spot, which occurs at the top and bottom of the of the pedal stroke 11.0clock –5.0clock .To overcome this, more effort is required. By changing the shape of the chain ring to an oval and then considering the position of the major and minor axis points there are gains to be made.

History
The oval chain ring has been around for approx 100 years and is not a new concept. Many companies have attempted to make chain rings that will offer an advantage. Some have got it completely wrong, whilst others have come close. We have successfully produced oval chain rings for 15 years

Oval experience
By helping to remove the dead spot with the MDT oval, pedalling now becomes a more natural experience. In fact the turning circle seems more round. We have found that the slower the cadence the greater the advantage.

Design
The shape of our chain ring is carefully worked out to give you an advantage. The percentage of ovality and orientation of the oval and its shape have been designed based on 15 years real world testing on the road.

Uses
MDT oval chain rings are designed for climbing where gains can be made. We have also found that some riders who choose to ride with a slower cadence in the time trial prefer our oval ring design. When using as an outer ring some minor height adjustments to the front gear changer have to be made. Matched pairs of chain rings can also be made available as well as triples.

Service unlimited
MDT offers a unique worldwide service. Making custom made chain rings with the largest possible combination of size and crank arm compatibility.
